Welsh language revival recieves EU plaudit

THE Welsh language has been held up in Europe as the continent's best example of the revival of a minority language. The plaudit, from the European Parliament's Intergroup for Regional Languages, followed a presentation by Labour Euro-MP Eluned Morgan and Welsh Language Board Chair Meirion Prys Jones.

MEP to join rally to 'cut the carbon'

EURO-MP Eluned Morgan will join hundreds in Cardiff tomorrow at a rally to highlight the impact of climate change on the developing world. The Labour MEP, a member of the European Parliament's Climate Change Committee, will take part in Christian Aid's Cut the Carbon event at Cooper's Field.

Labour forum launches group to challenge Plaid for Welsh-speaking votes

PLAID'S dominance in Welsh-speaking communities is to be put under pressure as Labour's Cymdeithas Cledwyn forum announces a new working group to analyse and challenge the trend. The announcement will be made tomorrow (Aug 7) by Alun Davies AM and Eluned Morgan MEP at a meeting of Welsh Labour's Cymdeithas Cledwyn forum at the National Eisteddfod.

Mercury falling as MEPs back ban

EUROPE today delivered a major victory for public health after Euro-MPs backed a ban on the use of mercury in thermometers and other measuring instruments. Wales Labour MEPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan joined their colleagues to agree a ban on the sale of non-electrical instruments containing the toxic heavy metal, such as barometers, manometers and thermometers.

EU powers energy consumer votes

ENERGY users across Wales can look forward to a better deal after the EU today unveiled plans for a new charter of rights for consumers. Wales Euro-MP Eluned Morgan, Labour's European spokesperson on energy, first proposed introducing the charter to protect the rights of consumers in the EU's newly liberalised energy market.

MEPs end cruel cat and dog fur trade

THE cruel trade in cat and dog fur is set to end in Europe- after Euro-MPs today won agreement for an EU-wide ban. Wales Labour MEPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan supported moves to end the trade, for which more than two million dogs and cats are slaughtered each year, mostly in China and other Asian countries.

MEPs cut mobile bills down to size

CALLING home from the Costas will be cheaper this summer - after Wales Euro-MPs Glenys Kinnock and Eluned Morgan backed plans to slash mobile phone 'roaming' charges. The Labour MEPs today joined colleagues in Strasbourg to support the new European Consumer Tariff which will automatically cap the so-called 'roaming' charges levied by companies when you use your phone elsewhere in Europe.
